In real life the show "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" was given such an award by the actual city council of West Covina, California for promoting the city on the show (see Notes below). |
History[]
Season One[]
In 2016 the law firm of Whitefeather & Associates filed a class action lawsuit against Greater City Water. The claim was that the company was involved in illegal activities which affected residents of West Covina. Star attorney Rebecca Bunch was the lead in the case but despite her best efforts was unable to convince the judge her evidence was reliable. The lawsuit was dismissed but it got the attention of a metro city reporter. Thanks to some illegally obtained GCW emails he wrote a story and exposed the truth. The scandal got national attention and Rebecca was heralded as a hero. The City council and mayor of West Covina decided to award her with a Key To The City.
The mayor personally went to Whitefeather & Associates to tell Rebecca who, due to financial problems she was having, seemed unenthused by the honor. A ceremony was scheduled to be held in the park with numerous press and a large crowd in attendance. Rebecca ended up being late for the event and when she finally arrived she seemed miserable and noticeably distracted. Nevertheless, she took the stage and the mayor awarded her with the Key To The City as the photographers on hand took pictures. Rebecca was handed the microphone to give a speech but could only manage to say a few words. She then unexpectedly ran off with the key as the audience looked on confused and her friend Paula Proctor cheered her on ("Josh is Going to Hawaii!")
Season Two[]
The Key to the City was eventually hung up in Rebecca's office framed and located on the wall behind her desk.
- Appearances:
- "Where Is Josh's Friend?": The key can be seen as Paula helps Rebecca track down Greg on the computer.
- "When Will Josh See How Cool I Am?": The key can be seen when Paula tells Rebecca she's going to law school.
- "When Do I Get to Spend Time With Josh?": Rebecca gets kicked out of her office and carries the key to her new cubicle next to Paula. The key can also clearly be seen towards the end of George’s musical number when the camera zooms in on him.
