Lea Solanga (full name María Lea Carmen Imutan Salonga) is a Filipino actress and singer. She was born on February 22, 1971 in Elmira, Manila to María Ligaya Alcantara, née Imuta, and her husband Naval Rear admiral Feliciano Genuino Salonga. She and her younger brother Gerard Salonga were raised in Angeles City before the family settled in Manila. She began her musical theater career at age seven starring in an adaption of "The King and I." She received more roles on stage in a variety of productions. This lead to her recording her first album at the age of ten called "Small Voices" and appeared on several television shows on the GMA Network. As she became a teen idol in her home country she managed to complete her secondary education at Operation Brotherhood Montessori Center. She continued her studies at the University of the Philippines and Ateneo de Manila University. During this time in 1989 her international career took off when she was cast in the role of "Kim" in the London musical "Miss Saigon." The following year she won a Laurence Olivier Award for her performance and in 1991 again played the role for the Broadway production of the show. This garnered her more awards and critical acclaim including a Tony making history as the was the first Asian actress to be a recipient. In 1992 she provided the singing voice of Jasmine in the Disney film "Aladdin." Over the next two decades she continued to appear in various television, film, and on stage productions. She also continued to work on Disney related side projects providing the voices for Princess Jasmine and Mulan using her native language of Tagalog.
